On 14 December 1990, the United Nations General Assembly designated 1 October the International Day of Older Persons.

The theme of the 2015 commemoration is “Sustainability and Age Inclusiveness in the Urban Environment”.

Parallel to the International Day of Older Persons , several programmes such as selection of Elderly Singing star, a Quiz competition, the district's Best Elders Dancing Group etc., will be held targeting the elderly people in the Anuradhapura District.

Around 1000 elders representing various parts of the country will be participating at this ceremony.

According to Anuradhapura District Secretary D.P.G.Kumarasiri, a large crowd including parliamentarians from the Anuradhapura District, Chief Minister of North Central Province, other political authority and higher officials of the district are expected to participate.
