    SL Army lease out land for cultivation of commercial crops

    Sri Lanka Army entered into an agreement with Browns Global Farm (Pvt.) Ltd. for lease of 400 hectares of land belonging to the Army for exclusively environment friendly cultivation purpose.

    Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, Commander of the Army on behalf of the Army and  I.C Nanayakkara, Chairman, Browns Company Ltd, signed the cultivation Agreement on Friday (21) at Army Headquarters.  A few representatives from the Browns Global Farm (Pvt) Ltd, including Messrs N.I Delpechitra (General Manager), C.D Ediriwickrama (Senior Vice President), Ama Wimalasena (Assistant Manager) and S.H Yapa (Manager Agribusiness), were present at the Commander’s office.   

     

    Browns Global Farm (Pvt) Ltd will cultivate Teak and Sandalwood for timber purposes and fruits such as Banana, Pineapple, Mango, Pomegranates, Papaya and other crops for commercial purposes in the Army-leased land in  Kandakadu, off Welikanda in the dry zone.  Environmentally-friendly techniques with less application and spraying of pesticides  will be used for the purpose..

     

     More than 175 unemployed youth in the area are to be recruited for management staff, agriculture related employees and labourers thereby helping the rural livelihood.  

     

    Major General Chrishantha De Silva, Chief of Staff and Major General R.V Udawatta, Director General, Finance Management and Brigadier R.P Rajapathirana, Director, Legal Services were also present.
