A programme has been launched to provide Electronic Identity Cards to pensioners as soon as possible. The new identification card has been introduced with the help of new technology. With the use of this card, pensioners will be able to carry out transactions such as receiving their pension, among others, the Director General of the Pensions Department, Mr. Sunil Hettiarachi told www.news.lk.
He stated that in the future, utility payments such as electricity bills and insurance covers could be paid using the new electronic ID.
He pointed out that the department has taken steps to commence a programme that provides employment opportunities for pensioners and they hope to make use of the skills of pensioners in developing the economy.
He added that the programme aims to ensure that pensioners remain active members of society.
The Government official news portal is maintains by the New Media Unit of the Department of Government Information and it was titled "news.lk" and commenced in mid1996 and release to Internet from March 01st, 1997.
