    ​Productive discussions to attract more Korean investment to Sri Lanka​

    The State Minister of International Trade of Sri Lanka Sujeewa Senasinghe undertook a productive visit to the Republic of Korea from 2 to 7 November 2015 on the invitation of the Korean Government, to participate in the Global Infrastructure Cooperation Conference (GICC) organised on 3rd November in Seoul by the Korean Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

    During the visit, State Minister Senasinghe held bilateral meetings with the Korean Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Yoo Il-ho, and the Korean Vice Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Moon Jae-do. Minister Senasighe briefed his Korean interlocutors on the policy of the new Government with a specific focus on economic diplomacy, as well as on the interest of the Government of Sri Lanka to further enhance bilateral economic relations with the Republic of Korea, including attracting more Korean investment to Sri Lanka. Discussions also focused on Korean investment in heavy industrial zones in Sri Lanka, making use of the location advantage, connectivity and port infrastructure of Sri Lanka, as well as the country’s stable political environment and proximity to markets.


    Minister Senasinghe also met with the Executive Vice President of the Korea Trade Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA), as well senior representation of the relevant Chambers, including the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI). During these meetings, the exchange of investment and trade delegations between the two countries in the foreseeable future, as well as the possibility of conducting a joint study to assess bilateral investment and trade potential were discussed.



    The State Minister Senasinghe also undertook site visits to Hyundai Steel Works, Hyundai Engineering and Kia Motors, among others.



    Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to the Republic of Korea Manisha Gunasekera, Executive Director, Board of Investment of Sri Lanka Duminda Aryasinghe and Minister Counsellor / Commercial of the Sri Lanka Embassy in Korea Jagath Abeywarna were associated with the State Minister during the visit.
