Under the first phase of the project, launched by the Colombo Municipal Council as a Private Partnership Project (PPP) two roads will be covered. Accordingly about 140 parking metres will be installed along the entire Galle Road, R.A. de Mel Mawatha and all by roads connecting these two roads, the Colombo Municipal Council Mayor A.J.Muzammil said.
When the parking meter system is in operation, motorists can pay parking charges by cash, touch cards or using a mobile application specially developed for parking payments. According to the Mayor no traffic wardens will be recruited hereafter by the CMC as their services will not be required when the parking meter system is in operation.
On the success of the first phase of the project, the CMC will take steps to introduce the system gradually throughout the Colombo City.
The company, which operates the traffic meters, will pay a monthly fee of Rs 1.5 million to the CMC during the first six month period from next January. From the seventh month, the CMC will be paid 40 percent of the total revenue or Rs 3.4 million monthly
