Accordingly the Colombo Harbor has earned 29 billion rupees this year due to handling of more volume of containers, the Minister added.
Minister Ranatunga credited the commitment of the officials and the employees of the Port for the increase in annual revenues which has grown by 8.3 percent compared to last year, speaking at a ceremony held recently to mark the milestone of exceeding the five-million marker in container handling volume.
He further said that the debt owed by the Hambantota harbor, which amounts to a total of Rs. 192 billion, is being paid back now and a significant portion of the income earned from Colombo Harbor will be used to pay back the loans owed to the Chinese government for the construction of the Hambantota Port.
