We will formulate a new constitution as pledged - Minister Premadasa

    January 13, 2016

We were given a clear mandate by the people and therefore whoever obstructs, we will dedicate outselves to formulate the New Constitution following the democratic process, Minister of Housing and Construction Sajith Premadasa said.

He expressed these views joining the debate on the resolution for the appointment of the Constitutional Assembly.

A new Constitution is a long felt need of the people. In the past even if someone has fever it was the Executive Presidency and even today the only saviour is Executive Presidency, the Minister said.

The joint Opposition said that the due process is not followed when the new Constitution is formulated. "But did the previous government follow the due process when Justice Shirani Bandaranaike was removed from position of Chief Justice? Did they follow the due process when the 18th Amendment to the Constitution was presented," Minister Premadasa questioned.

Minister Premadasa further added that both President and the Prime Minister are ready to fulfil the pledges given to the people.
