    Sri Lanka to construct green buildings from 2016 Featured

    The Sri Lankan Government has taken steps to construct green buildings in Sri Lanka from 2016 and as its first step buildings of public and semi-government institutions are to be constructed as green buildings.

    The concept of green buildings have been introduced to make a healthy environment in buildings and to minimize the use of utilities such as energy and water thus creating a healthy, pleasurable environment with minimal emission of green house gases.

     

    Accordingly, the government has taken steps to introduce guidelines for construction and maintenance of buildings in public and semi-government institutions as environment friendly green buildings.

     

    The Cabinet of Ministers has granted approval to the proposal submitted by President Maithripala Sirisena, in his capacity as the Minister of Mahaweli Development and Environment, to appoint a committee of officials to investigate the code of guidelines which that have been prepared in this regard and to prepare an action plan.
