Sri Lanka has declared the week from January 25th to the 30th as the ‘National Sports and Physical Fitness Week’ with a view to control Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) which are the leading cause of death in Sri Lanka.
The program was initiated on the instructions of President Maithripala Sirisena to introduce healthy living through sports and physical training as well as to popularize sports among the people so as to create a sports culture within the country. Accordingly, it is expected to create an energetic, enthusiastic and healthy nation encompassing the adolescent, young, adult and senior social levels of the society through the implementation of this programme.
Also the inauguration ceremony of the Sports and Physical Health promotion programme organized by the Ministry of Sports was held under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena at the Presidential Secretariat premises, today (25).
