He said the Cricket stadium, built at cost of Rs 4.2 billion, had seen only 11 one day international and nine T20 matches.
“The lack of hotels and accommodation close to the stadium is the cause of its low usage. One has to travel 40 km at least for these facilities. If the area around the stadium is developed, it would be far easier to hold matches there,” Minister Jayasekara said.
The minster insisted that the stadium should be put to use as substantial finances were used for its construction. Sports Minister Jayasekara made these observations responding to a question raised by Ratnapura District UNP MP Hesha Withanage.
MP Withanage said the International Cricket Stadium in Sooriyavewa built by the previous regime is being rented out to hold wedding receptions.He said the stadium is rented for Rs. 10,000 for a wedding.
