An extent of 163,134 acres has been cultivated with paddy in the Polonnaruwa District during the Maha season. The farmers expect a bumper harvest this time. The harvesting of paddy is scheduled to commend within the next two weeks. A Nadu kilo of paddy will be purchased at 38 rupees while a Samba paddy kilo will be purchased at 45 rupees. A kilo of Keeri Samba is to be purchased at a guaranteed price of 50 rupees.
Polonnaruwa District Secretary S. Senanayake said that the purchase of a quantity of around 30,000 metric tons of paddy is expected to be made from about 15,000 farmers. He mentioned that a special discussion on the purchase of paddy from farmers was also held at the District Secretariat.
