    Steps to protect families of fishermen

    Fisher folk must be protected, Fisheries Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said, promising a compensation of Rs. 1 million for every life lost at sea.

    He added however that he was against illegal fishing method, saying the use of prohibited surukku and laila fishing gear in alarming proportions must be controlled.


    Addressing a meeting with fisher folk in Tangalle he warned that fishing in such a manner would cause the fishermen a loss income in the near future. He said there were several institutions dedicated to research on fish resources, willing to train fishermen on legal methods of fishing.


    The Minister said that despite having eleven reservoirs in which fish can be bred, the country was still importing too vast a quantity of fish. He said the Fisheries Ministry has taken steps to develop lagoons in the country as well.

     

    "If we are to derive a sound income, we must also develop ornamental fish breeding also," the Minister added.
