Norms for proper conduct of Vesak celebrations

    April 28, 2016

The Buddhasasana Ministry has decided to draw people's attention towards the Buddhist flag and the conducting of dansalas as the Cabinet of Ministers decided to celebrate the period from May 18 to 24 as the National Vesak Week.

This will be done on the instructions of Justice and Buddhasasana Minister Dr. Wijayadasa Rajapakshe, Ministry Secretary Vasantha Ekanayake said.

He said Minister Rajapakshe had emphasised the need to hoist the Buddhist flag conforming to the proper standard during the Vesak season and pay due honour and recognition and desisting from using it for other decorations.

The Minister has said that dansalas should be organised with the knowledge of the Viharadhipathi and Grama Sevaka of the respective area and only clean and quality food should be offered to the people patronising them. Dansalas should be held as a proper pinkama in a disciplined manner without loudspeakers blaring out and causing noise pollution, he had said.

People conducting dansalas should prevent traffic congestion in the area by following instructions given by police to the letter.

Ekanayake said steps have already been taken to create awareness about these instructions among Shasanaraksha Bala Mandalayas and Divisional Secretaries. He said the official state Vesak Festival will be held at the Naigala Rajamaha Viharaya in Weeraketiya this year. (CDN)
