“We must not to look at the University Structure of Sri Lanka or UK when we design the structure of the proposed Police and Criminal Justice University but look at the structure of Deakin University in Melbourne, Australia which has a deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Development and Staff programme,” the Prime Minister said.
Prime Minister Wickremesinghe was addressing the International Industrial Mathematics Conference 2016, organised by the Department of Mathematics, University of Sri Jayawardenapura held at Fingara Town and Country Club, Rattanapitiya, Boralesgamuwa.
The Prime Minister also asserted on the need to change the university structure.
“This is an ideal time to bring structural reforms to the country's higher education especially make changes in the ideology and structure of Sri Lanka's universities since we have a multi-party state,” the Prime Minister said.
The Premier also said that it was hard to bring reforms to the country's university education due to the interference of political parties with ideologies.
“Under the leadership of President Maithripala Sirisena, now we have a multi-party state. So this is an ideal opportunity for us to work for the country's development. So I invite university academics and other relevant authorities to join hands to bring reforms to country's university education by making the maximum use of this opportunity,” the Premier said.
He also emphasised the necessity of establishing language labs in universities.
The Prime Minister said the government has already paid attention towards the uplift of the country's school education system and added that the government has also taken measures to preserve the country's history by establishing a separate institution on history.
