Health Minister Rajitha Senarathne is to present a Cabinet Memorandum for approval to introduce a plain cigarette packet in Sri Lankataking an examplefrom Australia. The surface of this packet will comprise of only the pictorial warnings and the brand name.
The packet will be introduced following the instructions given by WHO consultants and is expected to minimize smoking in Sri Lanka and thereby implement the ‘Smoking Free Country program’ by 2020.
According to the Director General of Health Service Dr. Palitha Mahipala, following the instructions of Health Minister RajithaSenarathne those pictorial warnings are also expected to be introduced for Beedi and Cigar packets.
