    School garbage management pilot project starts

    Royal College Colombo 7 will start a school garbage management program as a pilot project said Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government Faizer Musthafa.


    He made these comments at a meeting held at Royal College where he is an old boy. In addition Ministry Secretary Kamal Padmasiri, ministry officials, Principal of Royal College B.A. Abeyratna as well as teachers participated in the discussion.


    Under the pilot project initially they plan to reduce the polythene which is brought to school. The school will have a separate bin to put the polythene brought by teachers and students from outside. In addition the canteen will use containers instead of polythene to put the food.


    In addition the compost site and the bio gas unit of the school will be improved. The drains too will be maintained. The classified garbage program is also being practiced at Royal College.


    Under the Memorandum of understanding signed by the school and the ministry both parties bear the responsibility of garbage management. The minister is wants to identify the practical problems of implementing this project and thereby introduce it to all schools in the country. By this the minister intends that there will be a attitude change among parents and children about garbage management.
