Each district given Rs. 5 million to remove invasive aquatic plants

    July 08, 2017

Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Mahinda Amaraweera said that each district will be Rs. 5 million to remove invasive aquatic plants from reservoirs to make them more appropriate for fish cultivation.

The Minister informed the District Secretaries to utilize this grant for the development of the fisheries livelihood according to the decisions arrived at the meeting of provincial fisheries ministers.

There are nearly 10 000 inland reservoirs in Sri Lanka and most of them are covered with floating ferns like Salvinia and Water Hyacinth.  “These weeds are hugely affecting the fish farming industry and Divisional Secretaries have informed that repeated complaints come from the inland fishing community that their fish harvest is drastically depleting”, said the minister.
