He made these comments at a function to distribute school equipment for 1,000 students at the Tangalle Deepankara Primary Model School, yesterday (21st Aug.). The funding for the school equipment was borne by the Chinese Embassy under the patronage of Ambassador Yi Xianliang. The embassy had spent over Rs 1.8 million.

Minister Vedarachchi requested the Chinese government to support Sri Lanka to improve the fisheries sector as well as to solve the housing problem of the fisher folk.

The Chinese Ambassador said that China and Sri Lanka have been good friends for decades but the last three years was the time China assisted Sri Lanka the most. China has supported Sri Lanka to develop its infrastructure facilities and this helped to develop mega development projects. “The Chinese government will invest in the south around the airport and the factory complex. The students of today can get employment at the Hambantota economic zone”, he added.

“I believe that Hambantota will be the most developed city in Sri Lanka” the Ambassador said.

The ambassador was confident that Sri Lanka can achieve a greater development in 15 years. He said that the Sri Lankan government and the Chinese government have come to an agreement to establish a University in the south with Chinese assistance. This will pave the way for Sri Lankan students to get the maximum benefit of education.
