    July 18, 2014

Work on the first stage of the largest University Hostel Project in the country has been completed.

Under the first stage, thirty hostels have been constructed in the Sabaragamuwa, Eastern, Southeast and Trincomalee Universities. The Ministry of Higher Education said that all arrangements have been finalized for its opening by the  President.

Under the second phase of the project, 60 hostels covering all Universities will be built. It is to be completed next year.

Thereafter hostel facilities of 24 thousand University students will be met. These hostels which have the most modern facilities are subject to a warranty of 50 years. The total expenditure to be incurred is 13,860 million rupees. 220 million rupees is being spent on each hostel building.

The Government has adopted maximum measures to sort out the hostel problem of University students, under the guidance of Minister S.B. Dissanayake in conformity with the Mahinda Chintana Future Vision.

This will help to save a sum of 1200 million rupees being spent annually on private houses secured to meet the hostel facilities of the University students. (SDF/Priu)
