The Ministry of coconut development has implemented a strategic plan to upgrade coconut cultivation and the coconut industry. The objective of this programme is to increase the annual production up to 3650 million nuts by 2016.
The present annual harvest is about 2900 million nuts. The Ministry of Coconut Development has been able to distribute 20 million high yielding coconut saplings during the past two years.
69 percent of the annual production is for local consumption. The rest is used for coconut and allied industries.
