    Troops Attend Flood Emergencies in Kilinochchi

    More than 57 Army personnel including Officers of the Security Force Headquarters - Kilinochchi (SFHQ-KLN) late Thursday (8) afternoon placed sand bags and prevented a split in the Vannivilankulam tank bund, affected due to continuing torrential rains.Divisional Secretariat for Manthai East and officials at the Departments of Agriculture and Irrigation alerted the 65 Division Headquarters about the imminent danger that would displace thousands in the event of any breach of the tank bund owing to fast swelling rainy water levels.

    Accordingly, on the directions of Brigadier Wasantha Kumarapperuma, General Officer Commanding (GOC), 65 Division, more than 57 troops, belonging to 10 Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI) and 21 (Volunteer) Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI), immediately rushed to the location and began placing sandbags on threatened spots to prevent any further breaches. However, the troops were able to avoid a major disaster as dusk fell on Thursday (8). Meanwhile, 57 Division Headquarters of the Security Force Headquarters - Kilinochchi (SFHQ-KLN) late Thursday (8) afternoon swiftly made arrangements to supply more than 300 cooked meal packets to more than 75 families who have been badly affected, following floods that have inundated the general area of KN-22 Rathnapuram (South) in the Karachchi Divisional Secretariat area after the canal 'Dri Arukulam' in the Anandapuram East overflowed.

    Troops of the 7 Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI) on the directions of Major General Vijitha Ravipriya, General Officer Commanding (GOC), 57 Division took those meal packets to more than 300 displaced people who have gathered at different places due to flood situation. Around the same time, a medical team of the Army visited the affected area and attended to medical needs of those stranded victims, supplying them with immediate medicines.
