    Jaffna Army Headquarters Celebrates New Year

    Commander and all ranks of Security Force - Jaffna (SF - J), in keeping with age old Sinhala and Hindu New Year traditions, celebrated this most significant cultural festival of the year at Headquarters SF - J on April 14th.

    At the invitation of the Commander SF – J Major General Udaya Perera, officers, nearly 200 other ranks and members of the civilian staff serving at Headquarters SF – J gathered at the SF Commanders official residence and observed all customs followed by Sinhalese and Hindus during the festival.


    The hearth was lit at the auspicious time by SF – J Commander and Mrs. Thelma Perera, and a pot of milk was boiled symbolizing the prosperity commencing traditional performances in the New Year according to the astrological almanac.


    Maj. Gen. Udaya Perera planted a mango sapling at the Headquarters premises starting the work for the New Year after he joined all gathered at the venue to taste traditional eatables that decorated the New Year table at the SF Commander’s chalet. Addressing all ranks, he wished peace and prosperity to the country and conveyed best wishes especially to people of Jaffna and all soldiers and civilian staff members who are committed to the service staying away from their loved ones during the festival day and their families.


    Maj. Gen. Udaya Perera and Mrs. Thelma Perera gave away New Year gifts to everyone present at the celebration.
