    Import Trade Sector grows by 9.3pct in 3Q 2014

    The Import trade sector grew by 9.3 percent in third quarter 2014 with compared to the 9.1 percent growth recorded in third quarter 2013. According to the Balance of Payment Statistics of Central Bank of Sri Lanka the total import expenditure in third quarter of this year has increased to Rs. 682,049 Million from Rs. 579,069 Million in the same quarter of the last year, indicating a growth of 17.8 percent in this sector.

    According to the Trade indices, import volume index has increased by16.1 percent and unit value index has grown slightly by 1.5 in the third quarter 2014.

     

    The Domestic trade sector, which gives a higher contribution to the value addition of wholesale and retail trade sector, showed a further increase of 9.0 percent for the third quarter of 2014.

     

    In the third quarter of 2014, value addition of ‘Hotels and restaurant’ sector recorded a growth of 11.0 percent and in the same quarter of previous year also this sector grew by 13.6 percent. The tourist arrivals increased to 379,825 in the third quarter of 2014, from 320,624 in 2013 respective quarter and this amount to a growth of 18.0 percent.
