He further pointed out that a task force will be setup to implement the recommendations of the commission which was appointed on eliminating violence against women and female children and the task force will be responsible to implement all the recommendations including enactment of laws needed to protect women's rights before the International Women's Day next year. He said the Minister of Women's Affairs Chandrani Bandara has been assigned the task to formulate such laws. This commission was appointed by the Prime Minister when he was the opposition leader in the previous regime.

Sri Lanka joined the world community in celebrating the International Women's Day Monday at a national event held at Anuradhapura under the patronage of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe.

This year's celebrations were held under the guidance of the Ministry of Women's Affairs on the theme "'A Better Country for Women " keeping with the international theme of, 'Make It Happen', which seeks to realize the need to take the women of the world to new heights of honour and respect, and recognition of their rights through the realization of better social and environmental conditions for their progress.

Participants at the event were Minister of Women's Affairs Chandrani Bandara, Deputy Minister Wijekala Maheshwari, several politicians and over 6,000 representatives from various women organizations island-wide.
