    Colombo High Court acquits General Fonseka of all charges

    The Colombo High Court on Monday (09) has acquitted General Sarath Fonseka and his Secretary Senaka de Silva of all charges in the case pertaining to harbouring Army deserters.

    The Colombo High Court also lifted the ban on their foreign travel. Major Prasad Bandara who servesdas the Security Assistant when Sarath Fonseka was the Army Commander, in his evidence said that General Fonseka during the 2010 Presidential election did not forcibly detain any soldier.


    Accordingly the defence lawyers said that charges against General Fonseka and his Secretary cannot be further maintained and called on the Court to acquit them of all these charges. High Court Judge Devika Tennakoon pointed out that charges against the defendents have not been proved. Delivering the verdict she said that they are acquitted of all charges levelled against them.

     

    The Attorney General indicted the two accused with 41 charges that also included charges of mutiny, insubordination and harbouring army deserters during the 2010 Presidential Election. Fonseka and Senaka pleaded not guilty to all 41 charges.
