    Sinhala and Tamil New Year with a provincial sports festival 2015

    The Eastern Army command welcomed the Sinhala and Tamil New- Year with a provincial sports festival – 2015 at Sivananda grounds yesterday (09).

     

    The idea behind this festival was to bring together Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim communities for better understanding and mutual cooperation.

     

    Early morning proceedings were begun by Brigade Commander of the 231st Brigade Palitha Fernando flagging off  80 k.m cycle race for males from Kallady to Navalady junction and back and a 30 k.m cycle race for females from Kallady to Eravur clock tower and back. A 10 k.m  Marathaon for males from Kallady to Urani  Junction and back.

     

    Following the completion of these three events grease poll jumping, Pillow fighting, tugging, placing the eye on an elephant, Female and male beauty contest, bun eating, pot breaking, coconut scraping  and many more took place in the sports festival.

     

    A novel feature was a completion among the various army units in the east exhibiting traditional village huts, wells, carts and bulls, paddy barns, traditional furniture, and household items.

     

    At the end of the sports events traditional cultural items of the Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim communities were staged. The proceedings ended with traditional sweet meats being served to the guests in buffet style.

     

    Eastern Provincial Council Chief Minister Habiz Nazeer Ahhamed, Governor Austin Fernando, Mrs. Austin Fernando ,Bishop of Batticaloa- Ampara Rev. Dr. Joseph Ponnaiyah, Provincial Councilors Shiply Farook , Ali Sahir Mowlana , Eastern Commander Major General Janaga Welgama and Eravur Divisional Secretary M.S.M. Haniffa awarded the prizes to the winners of the competitions.
