Government to end line room culture

    April 23, 2015

Plantation workers in Badulla District will be provided with seven perch block of land each to 1,000 to build houses on April 25. The land ownerships will be handed over to plantation workers under the patronage of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe at a ceremony in Bandarawela.

The Ministry of Plantation Industries has identified suitable lands in the plantations which are devoid of natural disasters such as landslides, for the construction of houses for the plantation community in keeping with the 100 days' programme.

The ownership of the lands will be under the names of both husband and wife. The documents of land ownerships have been legally approved by the government. This is the first time in the history of plantation community, that they receive lands to build houses.

The line room culture will come to an end if houses are constructed in these plots of lands. The line rooms were provided to the people without ownership to the lands.

Since it is not possible to provide lands to all the regions simultaneously, the Government will begin the implementation project from Badulla, while the next will be Nuwara Eliya district and to be continued in other districts thereafter.
