Increase in wind speeds and heavy rain expected

    May 12, 2015

The Met Dept. said today that under the influence of Inter Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ, the area where the Northern and Southern hemispheric winds meet), the possibility for rain and lightning activities over the country is still very high.

Due to the active cloudiness associated with the ITCZ, sudden increase of wind speed (up to 70-80 kmph) over and around the island is possible.

The Met Dept. also said showers or thundershowers will occur at most parts of the island during the afternoon and night.

Heavy rain falls (more than 100 mm) are also expected at some places.

There will be showers at several places in the coastal area extending from Kankasanthure to Batticaloa via Trincomalee, during the morning too.

There may be temporary localized strong winds during thundershowers. General public is requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by lightning activity.
