The only school in the Meeriyaabedda area had been devastated by a landslide. As such about 200 children who were studying there had to continue their studies in Poonagala and Koslanda.

However many children had to discontinue their studies as they were unable to travel to these schools several miles away. But a school has now been officially opened in an unused Bungalow in Meeriyabedda.

The Bungalow and the surroundings were cleared with the support of the people of the area. A group including officials of the Provincial Education Ministry attended the opening of the school.
