The Irrigation Department said that many tanks in Districts such as Anuradhapura, Kurunegala, Polonnaruwa, Mannar and Hambantota have begun to overflow.
It is reported that the water capacity of Parakrama Samudra has increased up to 117,000 acre feet. As a result of this development, six sluice gates of the tank have been opened.
The Giritale tank has also begun to overflow with its water capacity surging to more than 24,000 acre feet.
It is reported that two sluice gates of the Minneriya tanks have also been opened.
Meanwhile spill gates of many tanks in the Vavuniya District have also been opened following the heavy rain experienced in the District. Among them are the Maha wewa, the Madukanda wewa and the Puliyankulama tank. Many low-lying areas in Vavuniya are also inundated due to the heavy rainfall.
