The objective of establishing a small mammalian breeding centre is to conserve the small mammals in Sri Lanka.

Due to the popularity of the newly opened Zoo at Pinnawela, a decision was taken at the Cabinet meeting to establish the small mammalian breeding centre. This Zoo which is situated close to the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage has attracted many local tourists from the day it was opened due to its open area for animals and has also become a new experience for Sri Lankan tourists.
