    Special transport for voters with disability Featured

    The Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya issuing a release states that any person who is unable by reason of any physical disability to convey him/herself to and from the polling station on foot or by a service provided by the Sri Lanka Central Transport Board or by a Regional Transport Board or by Sri Lanka Government Railway or by any public transport may under Section 83(4)(d) apply for a vehicle from the Returning Officer or his/her electoral district, by him/herself or by another person other than a candidate on his/her behalf.

     

    The release further states “It is required under the law that the application for this facility should be sent to reach the respective Returning Officer seven days, i.e. on or before August 9, 2015 before the date of the Parliamentary Election. If the Returning Officer is satisfied, he will issue to the person a permit to use special transport facilities.

     

    "The Returning Officer will be greatly facilitated if the application can be accompanied by a Medical Certificate obtained from a Registered Medical Practitioner (Western or Indigenous) confirming that the applicant is unable to travel by foot or by public transport. If an application is made by such a person to a Government Medical Officer, Registered or Assistant Medical Practitioner or to an Ayurvedic Medical Officer to examine the applicant and issue him/her a Medical Certificate it could be obtained free of charge. The name and the registration number should be stated in the Medical Certificate if it is obtained from a private Medical Officer (Western or Indigenous).”
