    "HELPING HANDS - SAVING LIVES" Workshop on "Responsible Reporting of Suicides" concluded

    An awareness programme and a workshop on "Responsible Reporting of Suicides" was held today (04) for the media personnel at the Government Information Department auditorium.

    It was conducted by the Directorate of the Mental Health (DMH) of the Ministry of Health.

     

    The participants were apprised how their career should be at a suicide case and how a suicide case should be reported for the society by their media.

     

    At present suicides have become a leading issue among the people who are disappointed with their lives because of many reasons.

     

    As well it is the 2nd leading cause of death among the young between age 15-30.

     

    According to Dr.Neel Fernando a main reason for the Suicides is the Depression.

     

    The DMH exposed that the number of People who committed suicides have decreased in Sri Lanka in comparison to early years. Although the number of cases of trying to suicide has improved.

     

    Psychologist Dr.Neel Fernando,Former Director General of SLBC Mr.T.D.K.Jayantha, Clinical Psychologist Dr.Rekha Attidiya, the Director General of the Government Information Department Dr.Darshani Gunatilake, Public Specialist Dr.Rasanjalee Hettiarachchi and a large number of Journalists were participated with this workshop.
