The project initiated by the Security Force Headquarters-West (SFHQ-West) saw 100 Kumbuk (Arjun tree) saplings being planted this morning along the cycling path at the walking path. According to army sources the project will see trees being planted covering areas in the coastal belt from Matara to Puttalam which will also aims at creating public awareness on the importance of environmental conservation.

Under the national initiative the army expects to plant trees in 287 selected state land slots in the Southern, Western, Sabaragamuwa and Wayamba provinces with priority focus on the coastal belt which remains badly affected due to coastal erosion.

State institutions including the Coast Conservation Department, Coastal Resources Department and Forest Conservation Department have come forward to assist the Army-initiated project.

Recently the army also carried out 'Fox Hill Green' a project to plant trees at Fox Hill in Diyatalawa, the cantonment town in the Uva Province.
