Navy rescue a fisherman on a distressed fishing trawler

    November 22, 2018

A troop of naval personnel attached to SLNS Mahaweli in Eastern Naval Command, rescued a fisherman who was onboard “jayavi IV”, a distressed trawler at the Codbay fishing harbour, on 19th November.

This trawler which was being loaded with ice had gone out of control of the coxswain and listed. When the incident was informed, the Navy promptly dispatched a rescue team. Thereafter, a stranded person inside the distressed trawler was safely rescued by Naval personnel with the assistance of fishermen and transferred him to the General Hospital-Trincomalee for medical treatment.

Further, as a side effect of this accident, an oil spill was observed in Codbay fisheries harbour and an operation was launched by the SL Navy in coordination with the Department of SL Coastguard to remove the spilled oil. Accordingly, about 350 liters of spilled oil was removed by a strenuous work.
