    Renovated Periyakulam tank opened

    Periyakulam tank in Jaffna that army personnel renovated on the request of agrarian organisations in the area was vested with farmers of the area by Army Commander Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva on Monday. It is the largest tank in Jaffna, which provides water for about 800 acres in Araliy North. The project renovation was initiated on the request of Dr. Sidambaran Mohan, the President of ‘Friends of Jaffna’ Organisation and the Farmers’ Society of Vadukkoddai - Southwest together with Government Agent N. Vethanayahan.

    Jaffna Security Forces Commander Major General Ruwan Wanigasooriya along with the General Officer Commanding 51 Division Brigadier Lalith Rathnayake and Commanding Officer 10 Field Regiment Sri Lanka Engineers Major Waruna Ponnamperuma oversaw the project.It was partly funded by the Government Agent’s Office and manpower and machinery were provided by Security Forces Headquarters - Jaffna. Villagers and schoolchildren planted saplings around the tank on its opening day.
