At present there are 196 professional lifeguards in the SLCG. They are trained at the Life Saving Training School of Balapitiya. The SLCG maintains 13 lifesaving points at different parts of the island.

SLCG commenced lifesaving activities in 2009. In December that year SLCG lifeguards saved Johong Seok of Korea from drowning at the Mirissa beach in the Deep South. He is the first foreigner to be saved by SLCG lifeguards.
