Energy authority to distribute 1 million LED bulbs island wide Featured

    October 23, 2018

Sri Lanka's Sustainable Energy Authority says it will distribute 1 million LED bulbs island wide next month. The Director General of the Authority, Ranjith Sepala, said that the LED bulbs will be given to selected households with monthly electricity consumption of under ninety units.

Since it is difficult to convince the electricity consumers to buy more efficient but costly LED bulbs, the energy authority has launched the "Shakthi" LED Distribution Program.

Under the program, utilities will buy the LED lamps in bulk to supply LEDs at a price less than one-third of the market price. Low priced LEDs will be provided on a 2 year loan scheme and the investment payback is four months.

The Energy Authority will disseminate 10 million LEDs (9 W) among 3.9 million households, which will reduce the peak demand by 304 MW, saving 432 GWh and 297,907 t CO 2 annually.

The Director General said that it is expected to reduce electricity demand by 300 megawatts and pointed out that many economic benefits will result by reducing consumption during peak demand.
