Landslide warnings
The National Building research organization has extended the landslide warning issued to 5 districts as the areas continue to receive heavy rainfall. Landslide warnings have been issued to the districts of Nuwara Eliya,Matale and Kaluthara
The affected
Three lives have been lost so far due to the prevailing conditions. According to the Disaster Managment Centre, 27,949 people living in 13 districts have been affected by the adverse weather. Assistant Director of the DMC Pradeep Koddippili said that 2500 displaced families are being sheltered at safe locations.
A landslide in Gelioya destroyed a house during heavy showers. Two people who were in the house at the time sustained injuries. Over in Mullaitivu, six people who were caught in a strong current were rescued from the Niththaguykulam tank . The rescue operation was carried out by officers of the Anuradhapura Airforce.
Floods
The District Secretary of Batticaloa speaking to News1st said that 20,187 people belonging to 5775 families have been affected by flooding in the district. Houses in Siththandi, Chandaarumulai, and Thalawai have been inundated and the road connecting Siththandi and Eerakulam is completely underwater. Meanwhile, 4000 families living in Chenkaladi have also been affected.
Reports say that the main road stretching across Muthuur and Saampuur, and also lowlands in areas such as Mailappaseenai, and Kaarawettuwan have been inundated.
Meanwhile, in Chilaw, the spill gate of Thimbilla wewa was damaged by the incessant rains experienced in the area. With the spill gates giving way, many houses in the area were flooded. Members of the Sri Lanka Army, area residents and officers of the divisional secretariat are taking measures to find a temporary remedy to the situation.
Spill gates opened
While the water levels of Kalu, Nilwala, Attanagalu Oya and a number of other reservoirs have increased, spill gates of multiple tanks and reservoirs have been opened.
Polonnaruwa: Spill gates of the Kadawala tank opened following 4 days of heavy rain.
Anuradhapura: Spill gates of the Thissa wewa, Nuwara Wewa and Mahakanadara wewa opened. Water of the latter being released into the Malwathu Oya.
Hambantota: All spill gates of the Muruthaweka reservoir were opened this morning.
