    JICA funds to set up major water projects in Anuradhapura Featured

    The Japan International Corporation Agency (JICA) funded the Anuradhapura North Water Project (Phase I) is in progress now.Once completed, it will resolve the regional drinking water shortage. Mahakanadarawa in Mihintale will provide water for the project. The JICA will provide Rs. 5,166 and the Government Rs. 2,789 m for the project.

    Project Director M.S.M. Rizwan said 100,000 people in 300 Grama Niladari Divisions will benefit from the project. He said 28 rural water projects will receive adequate water with the Phase I. “We completed laying 340 km of pipelines now. The Water Treatment Plant of the project will purify 9,400 cubic meter of water per day. Three water towers will hold 4,000 cubic meter of water. The towers will be set up in Pihimbiyagollewa, Ethakada, Isinnbessagala and Rambewa,” Rizwan said.
    The Mahakanadarawa Reservoir will provide 6,700 cubic meters of water daily for the project. The Moragahakanda Reservoir will provide 56,750 acre feet of water by 2026 for the project, Rizwan said. He said Rs. 300 m will be granted under the water project to the Irrigation Department by the Water Project Management to renovate canals of the Moragahakanda Reservoir. The project will be completed by the end of 2020, he said.
    The JICA will also fund the proposed Anuradhapura North Water Supply Project Phase II. Around 193,000 people in 119 Grama Niladhari Divisions in Padaviya, Horowpothana, Kahatagasdigiliya and Kebithigollewa.will benefit from the Phase II. The newly constructed Yan Oya Reservoir will provide water for the Phase II. The initial preparation for the project will be finished by February 2020 and the work will commence thereafter.
