    CJ APPROVED FOR INDICTMENT OF BOND SCAMMERS

    Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya has approved indictments to be filed against ten accused in the bond scam case before the Permanent High Court Trial-at-Bar following an application made by the Attorney General. The Attorney-General’s coordinating officer State Counsel Nishara Jayaratne told that the Chief Justice had given his approval on being satisfied with the information filed by the AG in the bond case. Accordingly, the Attorney General will file indictments in the Permanent High Court Trial-at-Bar against ten accused in due course.

    The indictments are to be filed against ten accused including the former Central Bank Governor Arjuna Mahendran, his son-in-law Perpetual Treasuries Limited (PTL) Beneficiary Owner Arjun Aloysius, Perpetual Treasuries Limited, PTL Chairman Geoffrey Joseph Aloysius and former Central Bank Deputy Governor P. Samarasiri. The proposed indictment would accuse all ten suspects of “conspiracy to commit criminal misappropriation in respect of Treasury Bonds to the face value of Rs.10,058 billion and will accuse Mahendran and Samarasiri of “criminal breach of trust in respect of Treasury Bonds to the face value of Rs. 10,058 billion” resulting in a loss to the government of Rs 688,762,100.

    Former Deputy Governor P. Samarasiri is to be accused of abetting the former Central Bank Governor Arjuna Mahendran to commit criminal breach of trust in respect of Treasury Bonds.

    The PTL is to be accused of insider dealing and criminal misappropriation in respect of Treasury Bonds to the face value of Rs. 5 billion.
