    Colombo Dockyard eyes dredger tender

    Colombo Dockyard PLC plans to take part in the tender for a dredger for land reclamation work as it has proved its ability in ship building with the successful completion of the cable laying vessels built for Japan, said CDPLC Managing Director and CEO D.V. Abeysinghe at an event to mark the handing over of the vessel to Japan at the Dockyard premises on Friday.

    The Dockyard is required to meet pre-qualification criteria to bid for the tender for the dredger for land reclamation and development under the Ministry of Megapolis and Western Development under which it comes. “We hope Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka will provide the opportunity for Colombo Dockyard to bid in the tender to carry out the project,” Minister of Ports, Shipping and Southern Development, Sagala Ratnayaka said.

    Colombo Dockyard PLC is awaiting funding from the government to build two off-shore patrol vessels for the Sri Lanka coastguard. The ship builder also signed an agreement with the Sri Lanka Ports Authority for two pilot launches and commenced work on the laying of keel for the construction of the hulls. Colombo Dockyard has build 243 vessels for the local and international companies and has exported 73 to Myanmar, India, Indonesia and Kenya.

    The first modern cable laying vessel build for Kokusai Cable Co Ltd. Japan is 111.1 meters in length, 21.5 meters in breadth, 8.8 m in depth with a maximum load laying draught of around 7.1 metres. The vessels has deadweight carrying capacity of 5,757 DWT and a speed of 14.5 knots with accommodation for 80 persons.

    The vessel is intended for subsea operations and cable installation and repair work of optical and power cables. The vessel is designed and equipped with a focus on maintaining good sea keeping ability and excellent station keeping performance.
