At the meeting, former Homeopathic Council Chairman, Homeopathy Dr. S.R.D.P. Perera said in the past, members to the Homeopathic Council were appointed in an ad hoc and authoritarian manner against which the Lanka Homoeopathy Foundation, which he represents, has taken legal action.
It was also revealed that those who had been registered as homeopathy doctors since 2009 have no technical standing. Dr. Perera told the Health Minister around 183 homeopathic doctors were registered by the Homeopathic Council from 1970 to 2009 and they are the only-legally recognised homeopathy doctors in Sri Lanka, who are now aged or have passed away. Therefore, Sri Lanka has a few homeopathic doctors.
Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne said he would immediately look into the re-establishment of the Homeopathic Council and as the Indigenous Medicine Minister, it was his responsibility to ensure that newcomers take up the field and to develop homeopathy treatment in the country. The Homeopathic Council should be established through votes of homeopathic doctors as per the Homoeopathy Act and the court order given on the matter. The Minister advised officials to do the needful.The meeting was attended by Coordinating Secretary to the Minister, Dr. Upul Gunasekera and a number of homeopathy doctors.
