Era of freedom and justice - PM Featured

    October 30, 2019

How can a person who cannot write his policy statement in correct Sinhala afford to govern a country queried Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. The Prime Minister asked this question addressing a meeting of Tuition teachers held at the Battaramulla Water’s Edge Hotel on October 28. The Prime Minister said “We not only took charge of a government but we also eliminated rampant corruption in the country, stopped the white van culture and stopped the assaults on journalists. We also stopped shooting on people conducting demonstrations and ushered in a new era by strengthening parliament and creating Independent Commissions.

The independent commissions were appointed by Parliament and not by the President”.The Prime Minister said the previous regime unceremoniously expelled the Chief Justice by passing an impeachment motion against her.The past regime also conducted an investigation which lasted for only 24 hours against the former Chief Justice and although the report was submitted to Parliament they forgot to get it passed. The previous government dismissed the former chief justice by force without getting the investigation report passed in Parliament.
So she enjoyed official powers at the time the present government assumed office. But she assumed duties at her desk and resigned after handing over a resignation letter. “We safeguarded law and justice and she safeguarded the traditions” the Prime Minister said. Thereafter a completely free and independent society was born. The police and the public service were working independent. The Prime Minister said the President attempted to expel him and dissolve Parliament but the Supreme Court annulled all those actions. The people should decide as to whether they should protect this freedom and independence or not.The Prime Minister said there was no need to introduce the UNP led New Democratic Front candidate Sajith Premadasa to the people as the whole country knew him well. “Sajith had not introduced white vans or built mansions secretly,” he said. Sajith had built houses for the needy and given pipe-borne water supplies to people who demanded safe drinking water they had also teamed up and given pay rises and brought down the fuel prices.
The Prime Minister said they had established stability in the country and ushered in development in all parts of the country. It was upto the people to decide as to whether they should go back to that dark era of white vans and indiscriminate killings or to a bright era of development under the stewardship of the NDF candidate. New Democratic Front Presidential candidate Sajith Premadasa at the outset thanked the group of tuition teachers who had gathered to ensure his success.

He said he would obtain their contribution towards controlling the economy after he is elected president. This meant that the economic policy formulated by his new government would be based on knowledge and wisdom. He had plans to create an economic development process based on knowledge. Tuition teachers made a major contribution towards the development of education and he would create an environment conducive for them to engage in their profession independently.
