The president has conducted long-term research on the undiagnosed cause of kidney disease centered in Rajarata and the findings revealed that the water used by farmers living in these areas was not suitable for drinking and this has been the main reason for kidney disease.

Thus, for the purpose of providing them with clean water suitable for drinking, Prof. Channa Jayasumana has taken the lead in initiating Nil Diyawara drinking water project and commenced constructing water treatment plants.

Under this project, a water treatment plant in the Maradankalla area in Galenbindunuwewa in the Anuradhapura District was handed over to the public recently under the patronage of State Minister Prof. Channa Jayasumana.
