The Ministry of Environment publishes the National Policy on Traditional Knowledge and Practices Related to Biodiversity.

    April 09, 2021

Mahinda Amaraweera, Minister of Environment  April  (08) handed over the National Policy and Strategy Statement on Traditional Knowledge and Practices Related to Biodiversity in Sri Lanka.

The policy was formulated by the Biodiversity Secretariat of the Ministry of Environment and handed over to the Minister by the Director of the Secretariat, Mrs. Padma Abeykoon.
The Minister of Environment Mahinda Amaraweera expressed these views addressing a press conference held in this regard Sri Lanka is a country with a history of more than 2500 years. The traditional knowledge used by the people of our country since that long time is still used in our country today. But many today do not want to follow this traditional knowledge. Our younger generation in particular denies that traditional knowledge is unscientific

But I think there are times when our traditional knowledge and wisdom are far ahead of modern science in what we call science and new technology. I will not raise a debate on this. But it must be said that the knowledge that has been handed down from generation to generation is our cultural right.

That is why we published this national policy and strategy, especially in relation to traditional knowledge and practice related to biodiversity. In this regard, I would like to thank Dr. Anil Jasinghe, Secretary to the Ministry and Dr. Padma Abeykoon, Director.

We use traditional knowledge related to biodiversity in several areas. They are still used in several sectors such as agriculture and fisheries. The Minister further stated that this new statement has been prepared under one objective and 07 principles under this policy.

The Minister also commented on the measures taken so far by those who destroy the environment. We will not allow any person involved in environmental damage to do so freely. The government has arrested and prosecuted those responsible for all reported incidents. I responsibly say that about 300 people have been prosecuted so far this year.

Also, by the year 2020, 190 deforestations had been reported. Cases have been filed against those involved in all 190 incidents. Over the past few years, the graph of deforestation in our country has been steadily rising. But I can responsibly say that after 2022 the curve of this environmental damage graph will be reversed. I do everything I can about it.

Take all possible measures against those who harm the environment. Sometimes I get various problems. But I have the strength to face it. Therefore, I say that this environmental damage will not be allowed to happen after 2022, the Minister said.
