Cabinet Spokesperson, Minister Keheliya Rambukwella notified that the Minister of Mass Media and the Minister of Justice have jointly presented a cabinet paper to the Cabinet of Ministers with regard to enacting laws to curtail fake and misleading assertions publicized through the internet.
The Minister said that these new laws will also take action against fake social media accounts in the country which currently exceed 17%.
Minister Rambukwella stated this yesterday (20) during the Cabinet decision media briefing held at the Department of Government Information.
He reiterated that it is crucial to take action as a large number of fake and anti-social activities are being triggered through unowned and fake social media accounts.
The Government official news portal is maintains by the New Media Unit of the Department of Government Information and it was titled "news.lk" and commenced in mid1996 and release to Internet from March 01st, 1997.
