    International Tea Day 2022 Celebration & Ceylon Tea Promotion in South Africa

    Sri Lanka High Commission in Pretoria, South Africa, celebrated the International Tea Day 2022 at the World Food Festival in South Africa  May 21 was designated by the United Nations General Assembly in 2019 to raise awareness of the long history and the deep cultural and economic significance of tea around the world. 

    This year it will focus on to promote and foster collective actions to implement activities in favour of the sustainable production and consumption of tea and raise awareness of its importance in fighting hunger and poverty.

    The program was presented by the High Commission as a part of an international event showcasing food and culture of eight countries, Singapore, South Korea, Philippines, Iran, Indonesia, Brazil, South Africa and Sri Lanka. The event was held May 30 to June 3, 2022 at the Korean Cultural Center in Pretoria, South Africa.

    The Sri Lanka booth at the weeklong event exhibited Ceylon Tea in attractive export quality packaging together with information on varieties of Ceylon Tea, world class quality of Sri Lanka tea, preparing tea, and health benefits of drinking tea. Visitors were served hot Ceylon Tea together with typical Sri Lankan short eats prepared by High Commission staff. The Sri Lanka Tea Board and Basilur Tea of South Africa supported this program with tea samples and information leaflets.

    During international food preparation and documentaries section of the event participated by the eight countries, the Sri Lanka High Commission arranged demonstrations on preparing  Ceylon tea and short eats, and presented documentaries on Ceylon Tea, Sri Lankan culture and tourist attractions, and preparing Sri Lankan foods. The Sri Lanka Tea Board and Basilur Tea – South Africa provided the documentaries which were highly acclaimed by the gathering. This includes a documentary prepared by the Sri Lanka Tea Board to recognize the International tea Day 2022.

     

    A large gathering of diplomats, government officials, business leaders and South African and international residents in the northern region of South Africa attended the event. The Royal Princes Network of Southern Africa specially appreciated the Ceylon Tea Corner to bringing the opportunity to taste the multi flavored Ceylon Teas.
