Sri Lankan Handloom fabrics showcased in Jordan

    July 12, 2022

With a view to creating awareness among Jordanian fabric importers on export quality Sri Lankan traditional handloom fabrics manufactured in Sri Lanka, the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Jordan held a discussion with major textile importers on 29 June at the Chancery.

During the discussion Ambassador Shanika Dissanayake gave an overview of the history of the fabric manufactured by skilled artisans who weave using designs handed down over generations. Emphasis was placed on the labour intensive nature of this creative industry which has empowered Sri Lankan female artisans and enabled them to earn from home.

Forty samples of fabric manufactured in Sri Lanka were shown to the attendees so that they could see the different textures, intricately woven patterns of symbols and imagery and vibrancy of colours. The Jordanian importers were impressed by the quality and showed interest in importing some of the fabric.

Videos on the Independent Collection (I/C) of fabrics and products from Island Craft, Urban Island and Kelani fabrics were showcased. The Jordan market currently imports fabrics from Turkey, China and India.
