    Parliament sittings suspended twice yesterday

    December 12, 2015

A tense situation which arose in Parliament yesterday when UPFA opposition members attempted to assault UNP MP Mujibur Rahuman physically while he was speaking about the murder of ruggerite Wasim Thajudeen. led to suspension of Parliament sittings at 4.00 pm.

The sittings resumed at 4.20 pm and again was suspended for the second time at 4.40 pm. and resumed at 6.10 pm.

The argument of the opposition members led by MP Dinesh Gunawardene was that Rahuman was referring to a matter sub judice and the same should be withdrawn.

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya recessing the sittings for the second time, said he looked into the tape and observed a name of a person or a family was not mentioned by the member on his feet but decided to expunge some of the words in his speech from the Hansard.

Following the ruling, the Speaker allowed Gunawardena to continue his speech joining the committee stage debate on the Budget for financial year 2016 under the Foreign Employment Ministry and Foreign Affairs Ministry.
